AS 1700/01

Postby 33901 » January 14th, 2014, 6:06 pm

Hello all. I am getting different responses from different watchmakers on whether the AS 1700/01 has a hack feature. I'm sure when I used to pull the crown out, the second hand would stop. I'm not sure which part it is but I believe there was some sort of brake spring that would cause the watch to stop when the crown is pulled out.

Any help/info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes!!!

Looked at a parts sheet for the Caliber you are inquiring about and it shows no hack mechanism to stop the watch. If you want a copy of the parts sheet I can E-mail it to you. The other possibility is that a hack mechanism was added by the company that branded it with there name and was never put on by the factory in which case it could be very difficult to find any information on it.

This is probably a Glycine Airman. There isn't a true hack on this watch, it is a cheat.

It has been a while since I looked at one but if you look above the 12:00 on the dial you will see a small hole. This is where a wire pops out when you pull out the crown. This stops the second hand only at this point.

I know a lot of aviators wore this watch in Vietnam, but I can ony imagine their frustration as they had to wait a full minute before they could synchronize their watches at the flight brief.

If you have lost this piece, you can manufacture a new one out of an old pocket watch hairspring.
