SUMMARY:Challenging Clock Repairs
DESCRIPTION:IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN! \n“Experience is what you get just after you need it”\n— Steven Wright \nDon’t learn the hard way! Forewarned is forearmed! Sign up for a lively 4-day\, 3-instructor (Michael Gainey\, CC21; Jerry Faier\, CMC21\, FAWCI; Andrew Baron\, CC21) seminar in the beautiful Southwest\, benefitting from a collective century and a half of personal experience with the most troublesome types of clocks and clock repairs. \nNumerous examples will illuminate potentially hidden defects in common\, everyday types of movements\, as well as challenges to be found in less common movements that the unwary practitioner can be blindsided by. \nThis will be a rare\, exciting and interactive forum presented by a premier group of some of the most seasoned clockmakers in the country. Students are invited to ask questions as each movement is described and shown\, on screen and with physical examples. \nDay Two will include a hands-on Wooden Works activity with dedicated slide presentation\, in which students will disassemble and reassemble these early 19th century movements\, while discussing their unique problems and challenges. \nStudents are also invited to bring their currently most challenging clock movements to the class for discussion and guidance. One example per student\, please. For the Wooden Works workshop\, students are encouraged to source and bring a “Terry patent” style 30-hour shelf-clock movement. A limited number of this type of movement will be available at the class\, for a refundable $150 deposit\, or outright purchase. \nWhether you are already an active professional or plan to become more involved\, this essential seminar will lay the groundwork for greater success by helping you to avoid costly mistakes in underpricing inherently problematic\, or unexpectedly time-consuming jobs. Students will come away with a keener awareness of how to spot trouble in advance\, and appropriately adjust customer expectations. \nClass cost is $850 per student for the four day course\, with a maximum of 20 students for the course. To register for the course\, contact AWCI Office Manager James Sprague at james@awci.com or by calling 513-367-9800\, ext. 301. \nSuggested lodging is the Pecos Trail Inn\, adjacent to the Pecos Trail Café. This recently updated historic motor lodge offers clean rooms and attractive rates. When calling to make room reservations\, be sure to mention that you are a clock class student\, in order to receive a 10% courtesy discount. A limited number of discounted rooms are available\, so don’t delay. SUMMARY:Clock Escapement Studies
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:  Escapement Studies is hands on class in the construction\, science and math as well as the adjustments associated with all types of horological escapements. It is a foundational class designed to help both those new to the field as well as those who have practiced and still struggled with escapements of all types. This class covers the requirements for fabricating a new escapement parts as well as the adjustment of existing parts. During the class\, the students will practice drawing\, making and adjusting four typically encountered types of escapements: the Square Deadbeat and Recoil\, Half Deadbeat and the Strap Pallet Recoil escapements as a practice to see how all escapements are generated\, fabricated and adjusted. They will also study the interplay of the different properties of all clock and watch escapements as they get their fingers dirty fabricating these four types. \nThe class will be team taught this time by Mr. Philip Stoller\, CW\, head instructor of Horology at Gem City College\, Quincy\, Illinois\, and Mr. Jerry Faier\, CMC21\, FAWCI\, longtime bench clockmaker. \nClass size is 12 students. To register for the course\, contact AWCI Office Manager James Sprague at james@awci.com or 513-367-9800\, ext. 301. \nClock Escapement Studies \nDate:   May 20-22\, 2025\, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nLocation:  AWCI Headquarters\, 701 Enterprise Drive\, Harrison\, Ohio 45030 \nClass cost:  $745\, which includes a $50 materials fee. \nInstructors: Philip Stoller\, CW; Jerry Faier\, CMC21\, FAWCI \n
