SUMMARY:Case & Bracelet Refinishing
DESCRIPTION:Polishing a case today requires many skills. Complex case and bracelet designs are common in the marketplace. \nStandardized polishing methods were often not taught in watchmaking schools here in the U.S. until recently. SUMMARY:Skills Evaluation (Session 3)
DESCRIPTION:This opportunity was developed to aid in: \n\nPreparation for the AWCI CW21 exam\nClass selection for future education\nBench testing accuracy\nPromotional bench testing within a company\n\n  \n\nThese personalized two-day classes are designed primarily for watchmakers that wish to bring their standards upward\, watchmakers whom have never had formal education\, watchmakers without a lot of experience and for those who feel they are lacking some of the small details that would help clarify and elevate past struggles.\nThe purpose of this course is to expose the watchmaker to a watch type of their choosing that contains common and not so common errors for repair. After the watchmaker repairs the timepiece within a designated period of time\, it will then be disassembled and evaluated in front of the watchmaker.\nDuring this process\, the watchmaker will receive input and suggestions to further discuss how their performance stacks up against the latest 21st century standards as taught here at AWCI and which apply to the CW21 exam.\nThe watchmaker will then be given a chance to work on any issues that arises from their consultation. We will offer person instruction\, demonstration and suggestions in order to rectify any issues that were discovered during the evaluation. We would create\, on the spot\, specific tasks that allow the watchmaker to practice achieving the desired result being sought.\nThis evaluation can be used to help develop a syllabus of study including class recommendations that we offer. It will aid in future class selection and help to establish the best course of action that would give the candidate the best opportunity to achieve 21st century results.\n\nAlternatively: \n\nThis course maybe also utilized as a “Pre-Bench Test” allowing the candidate to perform a watch repair with errors. Together\, we will review the results in person\, offer suggestions and allow the candidate to rework any problem areas after receiving special training specific to any problems that the candidate is experiencing.\nThis approach offers the candidate a unique opportunity to experience the “real life process” of bench testing. It can give the candidate some insight on how to overcome nerves and the emotional highs and lows associated with such an important task. Addressing any related issues before hand\, will definitely increase the chances of success.\nThis testing can also be utilized by watchmakers who work in a situation like a service center where they wish to bench test for a new or an advanced position within the company.\n\nAnyone wishing to participate in this unique opportunity or if you have any questions or need more details\, please contact Education Coordinator\, Rob McLeod\, at 1-866-367-2924 ext.309. \nSome of the details concerning this event are listed below: \n\nYou must be a current member of AWCI before enrolling.\nOnce enrolled\, you will be sent a form to fill out concerning what type of timepiece you are interested in and which category of evaluation will apply.\nThe tool list along with any other needed items will be furnished based upon your personalized selected program at least a month in advance.\nTo remain as efficient as possible and to provide the best experience for everyone\, we will try to schedule class dates for people that have the same interests together (i.e. automatics together\, quartz together etc.)\nYou will be responsible for your hotel accommodations\, transportation and meals.\nAvailability is on a first come first served basis.\nOpen to eligible watchmakers only\, no beginners please\nTuition for the class is FREE.

SUMMARY:Success in the Marketplace for Clockmakers and Watchmakers - 1/2 CEU
DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to prepare you for the challenges of operating a successful and profitable clock or watch repair business in the 21st century.  Most of us do not have the advantage of working for a large corporation where business policies are already in place written by some unknown upper level manager.  Most independent watch and clockmakers end up finding our own way through trial and error.  During this class I will share those policies I have developed over long periods of time that have been beneficial to me for protection and profit.  We will also discuss shop organization\, long-distance repairs\, deposits\, guarantees\, estimating and the value of clockmakers and watchmakers to the public\, your image\, promotion of that image via websites and social media. \nMichael Gainey\, CC21 began his clockmaking career in 1978 in a local clock retail shop delivering and setting up grandfather clocks. This led to a 5-year clock repair apprenticeship. He opened his own shop\, Master Clock Repair\, in Columbus\, Ohio\, in 1994 and has serviced over 40\,000 clocks since then. Michael is active in AWCI and its Ohio affiliate\, WAO\, serving the Board of Directors and on committees\, including the Education Committee\, where he helped write the first Standards and Practices document for clockmakers\, helped rewrite the certification exam\, and was an exam assessor. He frequently teaches classes and publishes articles in the Horological Times. www.masterclockrepair.com.

SUMMARY:Keynote Address
DESCRIPTION:Ian Schon of Schon Horology addresses the 2018 TimeCon. \nIan graduated from Boston University in 2012 with a degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Prior to entering the world of horology he was a Senior Product Designer at IDEO in Cambridge\, MA and ran his pen company Schon DSGN. \nIan’s start in industrial manufacturing magnified his affinity for high quality products. This year he launched Schon Horology with watches featuring Swiss movements and cases\, dials\, and hands made in his New England workshop. \n The introductory watch model\, The Dot\, is a reasonable 38mm which fits comfortably on a 6″ wrist but is large enough not to look out of place on ordinary 7-8″ wrists as well. The Dot will be available in a limited run of 100 watches each with a NOS Doxa Swiss made movement. The movements are completely refurbished and installed in the cases which are manufactured in the United States. \nThe Dial\, Hands\, and case are all hand finished in Ian’s studio and are made to order so some customization is available. \nCheck out more at www.schonhorology.com

Students will work in pairs to get a better understanding of gear engagements and how to troubleshoot weaknesses in gear trains and find remedies for them. They’ll test wheels and pinions in a depthing tool and choose the best of them. Then they’ll lay out the gear train in a set of plates and make shafting and do press fits as well. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring the following items to class: \n\nMicrometer\nCalipers\nDepthing tool\nYour other favorite hand tools\n\nDavid Lindow is owner of Lindow Machine Works in Lake Ariel\, Pennsylvania. His work includes period clock restoration\, vintage machinery restoration\, and making reproduction clockworks. He also manufactures the Lindow Rose Engine and the MADE lathe.
