DESCRIPTION:This class encompasses the basics of hairspring manipulations. You will start with a uncolletted\, unstudded hairspring. One error at a time will be introduced\, and correction and the logic behind the repair will be discussed prior to the correction. Techniques will be shown and through this educational experience strong basics should begin to emerge. Simple bends and multiple bends will be addressed. Correction of errors in the flat will also be a part of this seldom offered program. The finale will be the correction of multiple errors in a balance installed within a stripped mainplate and bridge. SUMMARY:Watch 100: Introduction to Watchmaking
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n  \n  \nA survey course for the new or prospective watchmaker covering the basic skills and techniques used by the modern watchmaker. SUMMARY:Clock Escapement Studies
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:  Escapement Studies is hands on class in the construction\, science and math as well as the adjustments associated with all types of horological escapements. It is a foundational class designed to help both those new to the field as well as those who have practiced and still struggled with escapements of all types. This class covers the requirements for fabricating a new escapement parts as well as the adjustment of existing parts. During the class\, the students will practice drawing\, making and adjusting four typically encountered types of escapements: the Square Deadbeat and Recoil\, Half Deadbeat and the Strap Pallet Recoil escapements as a practice to see how all escapements are generated\, fabricated and adjusted. SUMMARY:Introduction to Antique Clocks One-Day Course
DESCRIPTION:AWCI is thrilled to have one of its adjunct clock instructors\, Ken De Lucca\, the education director for the School of Horology at the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors\, return to AWCI with his one-day Introduction to Antique Clocks course! \nThis course will take place on Wednesday\, September 25\, 2024\, the day before the beginning of the 2024 AWCI Fall Symposium\, at AWCI headquarters from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nThis workshop will cover the basic functions of a time-only mechanical clock movement. All participants will disassemble and reassemble the movement several times. The assembled movement will be lubricated and placed “in beat.” Additionally\, participants will be introduced to a mainspring winder and a clock-cleaning process. Participants will also observe pivot polishing and burnishing and the importance of this procedure in a general movement servicing. A clock timer/amplifier will also be presented. \nHand tools and the clock movement will be provided but remain the property of AWCI. It is suggested that you bring your own binocular magnifier (visor) or similar device. Safety glasses will be required to work with mainsprings. DESCRIPTION:This class encompasses the basics of hairspring manipulations. You will start with a uncolletted\, unstudded hairspring. One error at a time will be introduced\, and correction and the logic behind the repair will be discussed prior to the correction. Techniques will be shown and through this educational experience strong basics should begin to emerge. Simple bends and multiple bends will be addressed. Correction of errors in the flat will also be a part of this seldom offered program. The finale will be the correction of multiple errors in a balance installed within a stripped mainplate and bridge. SUMMARY:Watch 100: Introduction to Watchmaking
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n  \n  \nA survey course for the new or prospective watchmaker covering the basic skills and techniques used by the modern watchmaker. SUMMARY:Servicing the Aging Modern Floor Clock in the Home
DESCRIPTION:Making house calls on floor clocks is a very important addition to any repair shop’s bottom line. Learn how Michael Gainey\, CC21\, has made this the most profitable day of his week. \nThis three-day class focuses on repairs to the modern floor clock movement that can be completed in the home as well as determining when the clock needs to go to the shop. We will be examining\, through a series of photographs and videos\, the most common problems encountered when repairing the aging modern floor clock movement and how to correct them. We will also perform hands-on repairs and adjustments to the modern Hermle clock movement. Through the discussion of hundreds of tips and techniques\, Michael will share the wisdom and knowledge he has obtained over the course of 46 years and over 22\,000 house calls that enable him to troubleshoot almost any mechanical problem in a matter of minutes. \nA partial list of topics to be discussed include; different house call approaches\, scheduling\, pricing\, guarantees\, worn out movements\, movement replacements vs. movement restorations\, basic escapement adjusting\, clock parts nomenclature\, maintenance intervals\, the house call tool box\, problems specific to certain movement types\, troubleshooting and general tips and time savers. \nPREREQUISITES \nThis is considered an intermediate level class. To get the most from the class you will need; a good mechanical aptitude\, an understanding of basic clock movement terminology\, the basic functioning of time\, chime and strike systems\, some familiarity with modern clock movements and at least some experience with repairing and adjusting clocks. \nTOOL LIST \nPaper and pen or laptop for note taking.
