SUMMARY:Keynote Address
DESCRIPTION:Ian Schon of Schon Horology addresses the 2018 TimeCon. \nIan graduated from Boston University in 2012 with a degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Prior to entering the world of horology he was a Senior Product Designer at IDEO in Cambridge\, MA and ran his pen company Schon DSGN. \nIan’s start in industrial manufacturing magnified his affinity for high quality products. This year he launched Schon Horology with watches featuring Swiss movements and cases\, dials\, and hands made in his New England workshop. \n The introductory watch model\, The Dot\, is a reasonable 38mm which fits comfortably on a 6″ wrist but is large enough not to look out of place on ordinary 7-8″ wrists as well. The Dot will be available in a limited run of 100 watches each with a NOS Doxa Swiss made movement. The movements are completely refurbished and installed in the cases which are manufactured in the United States. \nThe Dial\, Hands\, and case are all hand finished in Ian’s studio and are made to order so some customization is available. \nCheck out more at www.schonhorology.com

SUMMARY:Success in the Marketplace for Clockmakers and Watchmakers - 1/2 CEU
DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to prepare you for the challenges of operating a successful and profitable clock or watch repair business in the 21st century.  Most of us do not have the advantage of working for a large corporation where business policies are already in place written by some unknown upper level manager.  Most independent watch and clockmakers end up finding our own way through trial and error.  During this class I will share those policies I have developed over long periods of time that have been beneficial to me for protection and profit.  We will also discuss shop organization\, long-distance repairs\, deposits\, guarantees\, estimating and the value of clockmakers and watchmakers to the public\, your image\, promotion of that image via websites and social media. \nMichael Gainey\, CC21 began his clockmaking career in 1978 in a local clock retail shop delivering and setting up grandfather clocks. This led to a 5-year clock repair apprenticeship. He opened his own shop\, Master Clock Repair\, in Columbus\, Ohio\, in 1994 and has serviced over 40\,000 clocks since then. Michael is active in AWCI and its Ohio affiliate\, WAO\, serving the Board of Directors and on committees\, including the Education Committee\, where he helped write the first Standards and Practices document for clockmakers\, helped rewrite the certification exam\, and was an exam assessor. He frequently teaches classes and publishes articles in the Horological Times. www.masterclockrepair.com.
