SUMMARY:Watch 431: Hairsprings
DESCRIPTION:This class encompasses the basics of hairspring manipulations. You will start with a uncolletted\, unstudded hairspring. One error at a time will be introduced and correction and the logic behind the repair will be discussed prior to the correction. Techniques will be shown and through this educational experience strong basics should begin to emerge. Simple bends and multiple bends will be addressed. Correction of errors in the flat will also be a part of this seldom offered program. The finale will be the correction of multiple errors in a balance installed within a stripped mainplate and bridge. This class will touch upon truing the hairspring at the collet\, safe removal\, installation\, manipulation\, centering in the round and flat\, regulator pins and more.

SUMMARY:Clock Escapement Studies
DESCRIPTION:Class Description:  This 3 day course is an in depth study of a number of escapements (~8\, more as time permits) that are used in horological products. Their theory\, their construction\, and their adjustment are studied in detail.  Students will learn to draw\, identify escapement variables\, and manipulate these variables to achieve optimal escapement action and quality. This course has been expanded from the former 2 day course to give students more time for hands-on experience with the manipulation of the variables with a broader variety of escapements. The student’s command of the common escapements\, after taking this class\, should go a long way toward grasping the more esoteric escapements that cross the bench frequently. A poor understanding of escapement work and how to reset them properly for restoration work is a major cause of weak performance and a cause for return work. It is the aim of this course to increase the success rate at the bench and help decrease the time of repair work on the bench.  This class is also designed to push the student forward towards those skill sets needed for certification.    \nDate:   April 14-16\, 2023\, 10am-6pm  \nLocation:  Pecos Trail Cafe and Inn—https://www.thepecostrailinn.com \nClass cost:  $645 which includes a $50 materials fee. \nTeacher:  Jerry Faier \n

SUMMARY:American Time/Strike Clock Movement
DESCRIPTION:The renowned Ken De Lucca is returning to AWCI headquarters November 2-4\, 2022 to teach his introductory course on the American Time/Strike Clock Movement! \nThis course is aimed at analyzing the American style\, time-and-strike clock movement\, which is often the “bread-and-butter” of many clock repair centers. This introductory or beginner course is to present the learner with the various aspects of these types of clocks. There is much to know! What will be stressed in this 3-day hands-on educational program will be: \nDay 1: After observing how the clock movement functions as a time/strike movement\, the learner will start with examining the movement as a time only movement\, the strike train will be removed. The educational program on day one will center upon the power source (open main spring) and safety considerations. Study will then explore the motion works and related components to the dial hands. After this\, there will be an examination of the escapement (recoil). Students will become proficient at disassembly and reassembly of this “time only” movement during Day 1. It is recommended that the learner complete at least five (5) disassembly/reassembly activities of the time only train side of the movement. \nDay 2: Experiences will center upon the strike train and its related components. As with the time only experience\, there will be discussion of mainspring power safety and containment. There will be a discussion of “Lock”\, “Warning” or “Run-To-Warning\,” “Run\,” and back to “Lock” sequence. The necessary motion works components will be included to trip the strike train into operation. All necessary lever action will be considered and explained. Like the time train side of the movement\, it is recommended that the learner complete at least five (5) disassembly/reassembly activities of the strike train side of the movement. \nDay 3:  the learner will “pull it all together”. Since the American style time/strike movement is often times the most common movement type found in many clock repair centers\, participants will be requested to disassemble and reassemble the movement at least five (5) times. This will surely uncover trials and pitfalls of this process. Upon completion of reassembly\, each movement will be checked for proper operation\, along with being in beat\, proper synchronization of the strike train and related concerns. Many of these performances are required for successful completion of the Twenty First Century Clockmaker Standards & Practices. The ultimate goal of certification will be discussed. \nThere are only 8 spots available for this course\, and they will fill up quick! \nThe location for the course is at AWCI Headquarters\, 701 Enterprise Dr.\, Harrison\, Ohio 45030. The cost of the course is $595 for AWCI members\, $745 for non-members. \nContact AWCI Education Director Jason Champion to register for this class at jason@awci.com\, 513-367-9800 ext. 303\, or office manager James Sprague at james@awci.com\, 513-367-9800 ext. 301.

SUMMARY:Watch 175: Case and Bracelet Refinishing
DESCRIPTION:  \nPolishing a case today requires many skills. Complex case and bracelet designs are common in the marketplace. \nStandardized polishing methods were often not taught in watchmaking schools here in the U.S. until recently. Many watchmakers learned polishing by trial and error or observing the procedures of others. Today’s consumer has high expectations concerning the quality of the watch repair which includes the refinishing of the case and bracelet. Knowledge is the key. \nOur formal training program includes concepts and hands-on training in the following areas: \n\nCasing information\nCase and bracelet refinishing\nMetallurgy\nLathe finishes\nUse of modern variable speed polishers\nModern polishing techniques ensuring case shape integrity\nWater resistant testing\n\nThis course is designed to help you realize: \n\nA higher quality of service\nreduced come-backs due to moisture issues\nfaster turnaround time\nhigher customer satisfaction\n\nPrerequisites: Must be able to stand for long periods of time and operate machinery safely including the Lathe. \nLength of course: 40 hours in 5 days\, (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) \nCost $1345 for AWCI members $1495 for non-members \n  \nContact AWCI education director Jason Champion to register for this class at education@awci.com or 866-367-2924 extension 303 \n
