Clock Wheel and Pinion

Class Schedule: 3 days, Tuesday-Thursday, November 10-12, 8:00 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The AWCI Clock Wheel and Pinion course will include the material and machining processes making wheels and pinion; however, it will also stretch deep into the practical applications that the repairer and restorer face. While the class will include making the wheels and pinion necessary for a weight driven timepiece (this class will couple with future classes that will allow a person to complete a functioning timepiece), it’s focus will be primarily on the things that are practical in the small shop— the things that lead to a lower come back rate and, therefore, an increase in shop revenue.

The class will cover wheel cutting on the milling machine, the lathe, and a devoted gear cutting machine. It will cover where the standards will lead you astray and where they are absolutely necessary to calculate sizes. Layouts, press fits, and spoking will also be covered. The metallurgy of horological gear cutting will also be explored. We will also cover cutter selection for escape wheels.

The class will proceed from the standpoint of replacing a wheel and pinion that are missing from a train, and it will move on to make that assembly then duplicate the rest of the pieces in the gear train.

Necessary tools will be provided; however, students are welcome to bring their favorite jeweler’s saws and measuring devices.
