Recapping the 2023 AWCI Fall Symposium
By James Sprague
The third time, as they say, was a charm last month for AWCI. The 2023 AWCI Fall Symposium was held September 28-30, for the third year in a row, at AWCI headquarters in Harrison, Ohio, drawing a sold-out crowd of 120 horological professionals, students, instructors, recruiters, hobbyists and others to the three-day event that was chock-full of presentations, lectures, food and more.
The idea for the Fall Symposium being held at AWCI headquarters came about in 2021, courtesy of former AWCI president Justin Harrell, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as a way for AWCI membership to get together in a more relaxed atmosphere, to learn, connect and reconnect with fellow members, and not have to spend a lot of money to do so.
Since that point, and the initial Fall Symposium at AWCI headquarters in the fall of 2021, the annual event has grown in attendance and presenters, while still maintaining low costs for attendees to participate.
And, judging by this year’s symposium attendance, along with the guest speakers that gave presentations, the event is becoming a huge success and one that horological enthusiasts are marking on their calendars.
“You’re sold out because of the food last year!” wrote Stan McMahan, instructor at Paris Junior College, upon the news of the Fall Symposium being sold out.
