This 3-day course covers the basics of gear train design and layout. This 3-day course covers the basics of gear train design and layout for clocks. Students will work in pairs to get a better understanding of gear engagements and how to troubleshoot weaknesses in gear trains and find remedies for them. They’ll test wheels and pinions in a depthing tool and choose the best of them. Then they’ll lay out the gear train in a set of plates and make shafting and do press fits as well.

David Lindow is owner of Lindow Machine Works in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. His work includes period clock restoration, vintage machinery restoration, and making reproduction clockworks. He also manufactures the Lindow Rose Engine and the MADE lathe. Lindow is the president of Ornamental Turners International and a regular guest tutor at the Memoria Technica Workshop in Seattle where he teaches engine turning classes.
